40s style traditional house

Taking a sculptural and dynamic approach to the additions to this unremarkable 40s style traditional house in Pasadena, BiLDEN increased the living space and dramatically opened it up to the surrounding landscape.

Elements of the original building were integrated into the addition to mitigate the dominating effects of the new second story master suite.

With the kitchen relocated to be the focal point of the house and open up the living and dining rooms to the garden, the glass box breakfast room with its ‘galaxy’ of hanging globes is seen as an entry lantern or beacon along the steep driveway.

Of particular note is the rain screen of exterior plywood that adds warmth, color and contrast to the exterior elements.
